What We Do

Stone-Based Gardens. Horticultural Design. Living Landscapes.

HORTCO is not a conventional landscaping company. We create immersive, stone-based, plant-forward living works of art—crafted to support nature and grow more beautiful over time.

Our Difference

What Makes HORTCO Different

We Stack Stone for the Benefit of Plants

HORTCO uses stone to build microclimates, support plant health, and to unlock extraordinary botanical diversity. Every rock and boulder we compose is more than just a pretty face—they are for the benefit of the plants.

We Choose Plants for the Benefit of People

Instead of repeating the same limited plant palette seen in conventional landscapes, HORTCO blends rock and plant into richly layered gardens filled with texture, seasonality, rarity, and discovery. Every space is tailored to inspire curiosity, beauty, and daily enjoyment.

We are People for the Benefit of Nature

HORTCO works with the land—not against it. Our gardens support biodiversity and conserve resources. We even transform reclaimed concrete into thriving ecological spaces. Sustainability is not an accessory to our work; it is an example we set, one stone at a time.

Installations

HORTCO Signature Gardens

Each installation type is a distinct approach to stone-based, plant-forward design—and all can be combined to create a landscape that is uniquely yours.

Nook n' Crevice™ Gardens

Vertically stratified stones with narrow soil-filled crevices and sporadic planting pockets mimic natural mountain geology and composition. HORTCO's Nook n' Crevice™ installations are perfect for any space, large or small, and there is no better way to enhance an existing landscape. Crevice gardens allow exceptional drainage while creating cool root zones and microclimates ideal for a diverse range of drought-tolerant and specialty plants. We get the spaces in between.

Ideal for

  • Hot, sunny, dry places traditionally difficult to grow plants
  • Spaces beyond the reach of irrigation
  • Concentrated botanical diversity
  • Small or challenging spaces
  • Water-conscious landscapes
  • High visual impact in compact spaces
  • Intensive, precise enhancement of an existing landscape
  • Combining with any other HORTCO installation

Stonesflow™ Recirculating Water Features

See how HORTCO's plant-forward, stone-based design reimagines water features! We design our water features to look, feel, and sound as though they always been there. These installations create sound, movement, and cooling effects within the landscape, while unlocking high-density site-specific botanical diversity. Our systems prioritize long-term ease of maintenance. We follow nature's example, and we build 'em right.

Ideal for

  • Gardens for marginal and aquatic plants
  • Relaxing with noise cancelling water
  • Difficult slopes or areas prone to erosion
  • Pondless waterfalls
  • Naturalistic basin gardens

Urbanite Outfitters™ Upcycled Concrete Crevice Gardens

HORTCO's Urbanite Outfitters™ installations check all the same boxes as natural stone crevice gardens while offering a uniquely modern and sustainable aesthetic. Far from being a compromise, we rearrange secondhand concrete into striking geological formations, brought to life by richly diverse plantings. HORTCO's upcycled "urbanite" crevice gardens authentically and impactfully embody the true spirit of sustainability—and may actually be the best concrete has ever looked. Some things, it turns out, are better the second time around.

Ideal for

  • A highly architectural, artistic, and sustainable landscape feature
  • Hot, sunny, dry places traditionally difficult to grow plants
  • Spaces beyond the reach of irrigation
  • Concentrated botanical diversity
  • Small or challenging spaces
  • Water-conscious landscapes
  • High visual impact in compact spaces
  • Intensive enhancement of an existing landscape
  • Uncompromising ecological sustainability

The Emperor's Koi™ Stone-Based Ponds

HORTCO's The Emperor's Koi™ ponds carry our plant-forward philosophy below the waterline. We compose the pond itself through stone—creating the kind of rich, irregular geology where water disappears between boulders, plants emerge from unexpected places, and every edge invites a closer look. We build our ponds to look natural—or we don't build them at all. Koi, like plants, simply look better with stone.

HORTCO orchestrates something greater than escape. Our Emperor's Koi™ ponds offer solace—the sublime asymmetry of an entire day immersed in a moment beside placid water. Let that soak in for a minute.

Ideal for

  • Koi!
  • Botanically rich pond edges and shorelines
  • Naturalistic boulder compositions
  • Bog and moisture-loving plants
  • Creating wildlife habitat
  • Combining with any other HORTCO installation

Boulder Bogs™ Stone-Based Carnivorous Plant Bogs & Rain Gardens

HORTCO's Boulder Bogs™ take bog and rain gardens somewhere they've never been. By combining carefully engineered wet habitats with the geologic drama of boulder and crevice gardens, we create astonishing gradients from hot, dry rock faces to perpetually moist planting pockets—allowing xeric and bog plants to thrive side by side—without asking either to meet in the middle. The result is bog gardening reimagined: seemingly impossible plant combinations made to look as though nature put them there herself. Whether capturing stormwater or showcasing carnivorous plants, Boulder Bogs™ can fit almost anywhere and integrate seamlessly with any other HORTCO installation.

Ideal for

  • Carnivorous plants and other moisture-loving specialties
  • Dramatic xeric-to-bog planting gradients
  • Putting stormwater runoff to work in your garden
  • Concentrated botanical diversity
  • Adding bog or rain garden habitat to existing landscapes
  • Small, wet, or otherwise challenging spaces
  • High-impact specialty plant collections
  • Combining with any other HORTCO installation
